FAQ
Frequently asked questions.
Quick, direct answers about our programs, services, hours, and location. Don't see your question here? Call us directly and we'll get you an answer.
What do I need to bring when I enroll?
A state-approved ID (driver's license or passport; a visa or green card is not a valid form of ID), your Social Security card (or legal entry document), a completed application form, and your tuition payment.
What are the requirements to enroll?
Be at least 17 years old.
How long does the school keep my information?
As required by TDLR and the VA, we keep student records for 5 years.
Will my completed hours be lost if I drop out?
No. The hours you earn with our school follow you for the rest of your career, because they're tied to your Social Security number. You can check your earned hours anytime on the TDLR website (tdlr.texas.gov).
How soon should I take the state exam after finishing the course?
We recommend taking the exam within a month of becoming eligible. That gives you time to study a little more if you need it, and it works around the state's exam openings. You book your exams through PSI (test-takers.psiexams.com).
How often do I need to renew my license?
Texas requires licenses to be renewed every 2 years. Renewals are handled through TDLR (tdlr.texas.gov).
Do I need to come back to school for continuing education?
No. The school will help you through the continuing education process, but as of 2026 TDLR allows continuing education to be completed online.
How many times can I retake the exam if I fail?
PSI, the company that runs the Texas state exams, lets you retake the exam an unlimited number of times until you pass.
How long until I start working on real clients?
Initial training takes up to a full week. It covers the basics: how to use tools like clippers and shears, proper disinfection procedures, haircuts, tool maintenance, and more.
Why do I need a license if I can already work without one?
A Texas license lets you work legally, report income and pay taxes properly, and avoid fines. You also learn proper state procedures and law, gain the rights that come with your license, and open up more job opportunities.
Can I use my VA education benefits (GI Bill®)?
Yes. We are a VA-approved school, so eligible veterans, service members, and family members can use VA education benefits for their training. See our Financial Education page for how to apply, or call us and we'll walk you through it.
Is there any help preparing for the state exams?
Yes. Every program is designed both to teach the craft, whether Class A Barber, cosmetology, or another specialty, and to get you through the state exams. You'll be taught all the exam material during the program, get one-on-one tutoring with your teachers called a "run through," and take mock exams so you know when you're ready.
